Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions for you to review:

Q: I have a spell checker on my computer, so why do I need my document proofread?

A spell checker does not detect when words such as 'form' are used instead of 'from', or 'principle' instead of 'principal'.  Such errors can only be found through careful proofreading.  It also does not detect inconsistencies in formatting, layout and some errors in sentence structure.

Q: What is the difference between proofreading and copyediting?

Proofreading involves the correction of spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting and layout inconsistencies, sentence structure and basic paragraph structure.

Copyediting is more pro-active than proofreading.  It involves more extensive scrutiny of grammar, wording, paragraph and sentence structure, and also examines the continuity and flow of the subject matter. The actual content, however, of your document remains unchanged - this is especially important with regard to student essays and legal documents.

Most documents need both copyediting and proofreading.  At EYESPY we proofread your work and copyedit as well if required - all for the same low fee.

Q: Do you research facts or add in facts?

No.  We are a proofreading and copyediting company and we do not research and edit factual detail, add in facts, comprehensively re-write nor sort through a myriad of references.

Q: Do you edit manuscripts for publication?

No.   We do not ready manuscripts for publication.  This would usually involve the above with researching factual material, as well as using the particular style required by the journal or publishing company.

Q: Do you edit English essays gaining an assessment for an English class?

No.  This would be unethical - and probably illegal too.

Q: Is there a maximum or minimum number of words that you accept?

We are dedicated to smaller documents such as student essays, short theses or excerpts, newsletters, business brochures and web pages.  We do accept larger documents of over 6000 words in length, but they incur a higher fee and a minimum return time of 4 days.  No job is too small though.

Q: Do you accept documents from outside of Australia?

Yes, but we correct in Australian English.  Websites produced by non-English speaking persons from overseas generally need basic grammar and spelling checked, and exceptions can be made here if required.  However, in most cases we ensure that our corrections adhere to the Australian English standard.

Q: What standards do you use?

When we correct your documents we refer to the Australian Macquarie Dictionary and, if necessary, the latest edition of the Style Manual for Authors and Editors.  This ensures that your document is corrected in Australian English, in accordance with the publication procedures that are accepted within Australia today.

Q: How do I get a quote?

Simply e-mail our editor at editor@eyespyediting.com with details regarding the number of words or pages and the time frame required ( 24, 48, 72, or 96+ hours) - see our Rates page for details.  Also let us know if you are a student or not. We will then promptly e-mail you back a quote on the same day.  E-mail us back if you decide to go ahead with our services and our editor will immediately begin to proofread and copyedit your work.  She will then e-mail you a final edited version, original copy and mark up copies within the agreed time frame.  Notes on improving your English will be provided free of charge to students, and an invoice will also be sent to you as quoted.

Q: What format should my document be in when I e-mail it?

Your document can be submitted as a Microsoft Word attachment.  We will save it to a file and proofread/copyedit it using 'track changes'.  This allows us to make changes and track them as we go.  Having the 'reviewing' tool bar enabled (view - toolbars - reviewing), allows you to view the final version, the mark-up copies and the original work in the one file by using the drop down menu.  This is how the document is sent back to you.

Q: How and when do I pay?

You only need to pay us once you receive your proofread/copyedited document together with an invoice. We accept cheques and direct transfers from your bank account to ours.  Our mailing address and bank account details will be on your invoice.

Q: Can I get a receipt?

Once we receive your cheque/direct credit we will e-mail a receipt to you.

Q:  Are the details of my document kept private?

Absolutely.  All work sent to us remains totally confidential.

Q: Do you charge GST?

No.  We do not need to be registered for GST.

Q: How come you are so affordable?

Our professional editor is committed to providing a high standard of workmanship, while retaining affordability - especially for students.  We can afford to keep our rates low because we generally concentrate on smaller documents, and we keep our costs to a minimum.  We do not need to employ a whole team of administrators, nor do we have a fancy website and large overheads.

EYESPY simply strives towards providing a quality service that enables students to improve their performance, allows small businesses to maintain an excellent business image, and promotes self-confidence in the writing of English.  Our motto says it all:

" The art of writing in English with confidence, clarity and joy is a gift.  We firmly believe that everyone has a right to share in this gift; to attain quality without compromise - from the affluent business owner to the struggling student."
